G.E.M.S: Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully

Delta GEMS, a national signature program of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is community based program created to inspire young women and help them to actualize their dreams. Delta GEMS provides a positive network for teenage girls ages 14-18 to strengthen and develop their will to achieve. By encouraging a “CAN DO” attitude, Delta GEMS strives to “catch the dreams” of at-risk, adolescent girls. The purpose of Delta GEMS program is to form a road map for college and career planning which incorporates five major components: Scholarship, Sisterhood, Show Me the Money, Service and Infinitely Complete. Each component provides opportunities for self-growth and enables young ladies to function intellectually, responsibly and socially in today’s society.

The goals for the FAC Delta GEMS program are:

To instill the need to excel academically. To provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success. To assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures – high school and beyond. To create compassionate, caring, and community minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities.

Applicants must be female students who reside in Genesee County, enrolled in high school grades 9-12 (ages 14-18) and must have a sincere interest and willingness to participate in activities provided by the Delta GEMS program.

FAC Delta GEMS have participated in community service activities such as preparing meals for the homeless, park preservation projects, etc. GEMS monthly activities focus on various aspects of financial planning and budgeting, sisterhood bonding and enrichment, self-esteem and self image workshops, physical fitness, health/wellness, safety and self defense. The Delta GEMS participate annually in a closing banquet which celebrates the many accomplishments of the GEMS throughout the year.

Meetings/Workshops are generally held on the 1st Saturday of each month
